The I-485, also known as the Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, is a key document in the process of obtaining a green card in the United States. It is used by individuals who are physically present in the U.S. and wish to adjust their non-immigrant status to that of a lawful permanent resident.
The I-485 form allows eligible individuals, such as immediate relatives of U.S. citizens, certain family members, or individuals with approved employment-based petitions, to request lawful permanent residence. By submitting the I-485 form, applicants demonstrate their eligibility, provide biometric information, and undergo an interview with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
As an immigration lawyer in Chicago, I am well-versed in the intricacies of the I-485 form and can provide expert guidance throughout the application process. My goal is to assist clients in navigating the complexities of immigration law, ensuring their I-485 forms are properly completed, and increasing the chances of a successful adjustment of status.

The I-485J, or the Confirmation of Bona Fide Job Offer or Request for Job Portability, is a vital document required for certain employment-based green card applicants.
The purpose of the I-485J form is to verify that the job offer, as stated in the underlying I-140 petition, is still valid and will continue after the adjustment of status is granted. It is typically filed by individuals who are changing employers or porting their job to a new employer under the AC21 portability provisions.
By submitting the I-485J form, applicants provide essential information about the job offer, including details about the employer, position, and salary. This form helps ensure that the employment-based green card process aligns with the original intention of the I-140 petition and that the applicant will continue to work in a qualifying position upon approval.

Section 245(i) is a provision under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) that allows certain individuals who are otherwise ineligible to adjust their status in the United States to apply for a green card (permanent residency) if they meet specific requirements.
Under 245(i), individuals who are beneficiaries of a qualifying immigrant petition or labor certification application filed on or before April 30, 2001, may be eligible to adjust their status even if they entered the U.S. unlawfully or violated their nonimmigrant status.
The I-485, Supplement A, is used in conjunction with Form I-485 when an applicant is applying for adjustment of status under the provision of 245(i). It is utilized to provide additional information and documentation to establish eligibility for the benefits conferred by 245(i).
It’s important to note that eligibility under 245(i) is subject to various requirements and deadlines, and not all individuals will qualify. Consulting with an experienced immigration lawyer is crucial to determine eligibility, understand the process, and ensure accurate and timely filing of the I-485, Supplement A, if applicable.

The purpose of the I-140 form is to petition the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for the employment-based immigrant visa on behalf of a foreign worker. It is typically filed by employers who wish to sponsor a foreign worker for a specific job position in the U.S.
The I-140 form requires detailed information about the employer, the job position, and the qualifications of the foreign worker. It serves as evidence to establish that the foreign worker meets the eligibility criteria for the particular employment-based immigrant category.
